Tennis Tuesday is a weekly content series curated by the New York Empire that will feature some of the game’s greats and New York’s finest tennis coaches, administrators, and fans. This week, we chat with Wimbledon finalist and international sensation, Genie Bouchard.
- What are you expecting to see from the New York Empire this season?
I’m so excited for the two nights I’m going to be playing this summer for the Empire. I absolutely love NYC and can’t wait to play in front of the NY fans. Mardy Fish and John Isner are friends and I look forward to winning a couple matches with them. Its going to be fun, I hope we get a great crowd out to support us.
- Tell us about “the date.”
“The Date” was a fun experience. I always honor my word and I made the bet on twitter so it was only fair that I up-held my end of the bargain. My date (John) and I actually had a fun night. He was totally normal and good guy to be around. We went to a Brooklyn Nets basketball game and we were fortunate enough to have floor seats which is always a fun experience.
- Who is your greatest role model and how have they helped you achieve success?
Growing up I always looked up to great champions in tennis like Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and of course Venus and Serena Williams. They all have inspired me in different ways. Now that I’m on tour competing against some of them its a bit different. My family has always played an important role in my achieving success. My parents and siblings have provided a great deal of support and have made sacrifices which have enabled me to have the opportunities to be successful.
- What’s been the best moment of your career so far?
Best moment of my career to this point has been reaching the Wimbledon final. For years growing up I watched the Wimbledon final on TV and then to have the opportunity at such a young age to be competing in the final was a dream come true. Walking on the Center Court to warm up was surreal. Now my goal is to take than next step and win the Wimbledon title someday.
